GREEN LANTERN will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott-Earth's first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man-and many more. However, the logline does confirm that like in recent comics, Scott will be a gay character:įrom DC and HBO Max and Berlanti Productions comes a bold adaptation of the iconic comic book franchise: A saga spanning decades and galaxies. That last Lantern is noteworthy because as fans know, Scott’s backstory isn’t the same as the other Green Lanterns and he’s not known as a space-based superhero. According to the show’s logline, Green Lantern will include longtime ring-slingers like Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Sinestro, Killowog and Alan Scott.

It was revealed today that Green Lantern, which was first announced last year, has been given an official series order for ten one-hour episodes, and while details on what exactly will be taking place over that debut season are unknown, we have discovered a few of the Lanterns we’ll be meeting. The key element, as demonstrated by Cruz’s acceptance into the Sinestro Corps despite being a hero, is that fear can either be wielded for justice or for villainy.HBO Max’s Green Lantern series is starting to take shape, and we’re getting awfully excited to head to the stars and take the oath! Cruz’s distress gives her the will to overcome superpowered beings as a mere mortal and the ability to harness the power of the Yellow Lanterns. Lex Luthor’s dread of Superman’s power remaining unchecked drives him to find any possible way for humanity to rival the Man of Steel. A young Bruce Wayne’s frightening encounter with bats inspired him in part to don the mantle of Batman. For characters all across the moral spectrum, it is a necessity. Fear, despite its connotation, is not inherently a negative force. This idea manifests very literally in the final page of the story, when a Yellow Lantern Ring chooses Cruz as someone with “the ability to instill great fear.” Cruz’s offer to join the Sinestro Corps is yet another parallel to Batman, who received a similar offer during the Wanted: Hal Jordan arc of the Green Lanternseries and actually wielded the ring during DC's Forever Evil crossover.Ĭruz’s embracing of her own fears reinforces both the literal and figurative powers of fear in the DC Universe. Just as Batman combines his intelligence, strength and frightening persona to intimidate his foes, Cruz’s anxieties give her the willpower to think carefully and strike fear into her superpowered enemies as a regular human. But most importantly, Cruz weaponizes her own fear in exactly the same way Batman does.
Her internal monologue is also reminiscent of Batman’s, as she carefully explains her plans and how they exploit the weaknesses of her enemies. Without the power of her ring, Cruz has to stick to the shadows and outsmart her opponents using stealth tactics. The parallels between how Cruz and the Dark Knight operate in this issue are clear.

Cruz, now powerless without her ring, was left adrift in her sector’s station for over a year. When three Sinestro Corps members finally attempt to take over her station, Cruz decides to go full stealth mode. The absence of Green Lanterns has allowed the Sinestro Corps to fill the power vacuum left across the galaxy. Future State: Green Lantern details a possible future in which the Green Lanterns Corps’ central battery that powers their rings has gone dark.
